Boating Fails That Will Make You Think Twice Before Heading Out on the Water
Whether you live along the coast, near the Great Lakes, or along one of the many sinuous rivers throughout the country, being out on the water is a favorite past time of millions of folks. What better way to spend a beautiful summer day than heading out on a boat, a canoe, or even a cruise ship? Or maybe you're a fisherman who enjoys the quiet of the lake while ice fishing. Well, that's where you may be a little wrong. True, those things are all extremely great summer and winter activities, but it only takes one stupid mistake to .. er... capsize your day's fun. Wherever there is water, things are ripe for hilarious boating fails, and we have compiled some of the best right here! Take a look through our gallery to see the most shocking and funniest boating fails you can imagine. When you're done, make sure to SHARE this with some friends who need a good laugh!
Downside Up
This boat must have been going pretty fast to flip itself up like that. And they captured this moment at the perfect time. Luckily, they take extra precautions when it comes to boat racing, so we're sure everyone was fine.
Slow Down!
This guy is lucky that this pole didn't completely mangle him. He looks a little dazed, but OK. Maybe he needs another tutorial on driving a boat? We think this is one boat that won't be back out on the water for a while...
Bottoms Up
Banana boats and summertime go together almost as well as banana boats and people failing to stay on them. Great job by the camera person to capture this shot mid backflip. Yippee-ki-yay!
Going Against the Tide
This boater got completely overtaken by the massive waves. We are pretty sure that in choppy conditions like this, your boat should be facing the waves straight on so this doesn't happen. Hopefully they avoided those rocks out there!
Air Flip
If a boat weighs very little and is going very fast, it makes sense that it might do an air flip like this. We thought for a moment they might stick the landing, but no, no they did not...
Stuck in the Middle
"And for my next trick, I will completely destroy my own groin." This guy really should have kept line tied to the dock while he was trying to load the beer cooler into the boat. Drinking and boating don't mix, people. Unless you're going for a boating fail that is!
Low Bridge!
To be fair, fishing is incredibly relaxing and it's understandable to get lost in one's thoughts while out on the water. He feel that had to leave a mark though...
How Did It Get up There?
Now, we can forgive the captain of a boat if he gets stuck in some shallow water at times, but c'mon man! These giant rocks are clearly visible. How does a boat end up like this!?
Structural Damage
How many officers does it take to investigate the damage done by one boat to another? Four, according to this picture. We're thinking someone was going a bit too fast for their britches out on the water that day.
Oh My God!
OK, we really hope no one was actually hurt in this one. It's bad enough that they flipped, but they got some serious air on this crash. And seeing pieces fly off the boat is never a good sign.
Poor Steering
There must have been a crazy storm that day, or maybe the captain just didn't realize he or she was so close to that dock? Regardless of what happened, this is one ship that's no longer in ship-shape.
That Sinking Feeling
Well, things were bad enough with the hundred million dollar boat crashing into the water. But then the wave of water and debris flying at you is just bad karma.
Making an Entrance
This guy sure knows how to make an entrance. Too bad he can't keep himself above the water. "You got it, Bobby! Just keep paddl... Nevermind."
Making a Splash
We're not sure what they were thinking with this launch. It might have made more sense for the people to get into the boat after it was in the water. Just saying...
Slide In...
"Yeah, Karen. Just sit down, inch yourself forward, and away you go!" What this woman really wanted was a water slide.
Street Surfing
You've seen it here first, folks — the suburban alternative to hitting the rapids. In this suburban community, it's called "white privilege rapids."
Mayday! Mayday!
We really love the guy on the paddleboard. He probably could have helped, but some people just love to watch the world burn.
Man Overboard!
This man knew that his number was up and that his boat was going to be a wreck in seconds, so he did what he felt was best: jumped right into the oncoming wave. We're impressed with the height he got on that dive.
Take to the Skies
Anyone who thinks boats have to only travel "on water" clearly isn't trying hard enough.
A Quick Dip
Let's dissect this one, shall we? She probably caught something on her line stronger than they expected and as soon as the he went to hook it in the boat, that fish pulled out his uno reverse card. Some fishing days just don't go as planned.
So Long Sucker!
Sorry human. This boat is reclaiming its independence and going on to live its best life without you! You were always a drag on its dreams anyway.
Wrong Way Around
Well, somebody is a couple apples short of a bushel. Did they mix up their vehicles and think their truck was amphibious? With skills like this, we think maybe they should stay away from boats (and cars, trucks, motorcycles and any other vehicle) period!
Tuck and Roll!
She saw it coming and she held on as hard as she could, but when the ocean wants you out of the boat, you're coming out of that boat.
Crash Course Training
These cadets were training for a swift arrival onshore and they got more than they bargained for when that boat went from 30 mph to a complete halt. It's almost as if they had a contest going for whoever could launch themselves the furthest.
Swing and a miss...
They had a great day planned for their fishing trip but everything went south when this guy went to throw his tackle box in the boat. Little did he know, the boat had other plans...
Somebody is out of a job
Putting a boat back in the water seems pretty easy, right? Well, it is if the boat is properly lifted, but in this case, somebody missed a step or two. As a result, this beautiful boat saw it's last day before it had a run on the open ocean.
Surprise!
Imagine you're at the store, just shopping around for some noodles to throw in your pool when out of nowhere you get completely rocked by an instant-deploy boat. At least this guy has the best story anyone's ever heard and the footage to prove it.
Bye Bye Camera
These gentlemen had a fantastic camera they brought with them to document their every incredible moment on their trip. They thought they had that camera set up perfectly on the side of the boat for an artistic shot, and sure enough, it wasn't as secure as they thought.
Don't Rock The Kayak
Some people just aren't made for kayaks. It takes a bit of a core to keep your balance while you're on the water and these two people never had a chance of staying dry.
Ouch
What goes beyond an atomic wedgie? Because, whatever this is about 10 million times worse than that.
Waterfront Property
"The city view is simply to die for!"
Life After People
It seems that nature has complete overtaken this boat. Soon it will simply be part of the forest.
Poppin' Wheelies
Granted, we're not vehicle experts, but popping wheelies in a boat like this just seems like a recipe for disaster.
Get Low (Tide)
It appears that this family went out to their boat and found that the tide went out a bit (or a lot) more than they expected. It's really too bad, because it's clearly a beautiful day out. Oh well, they'll just have to wait until the tide comes back in. In the mean time they can do some fun family activities together, like play Scrabble. Or something...We don't know what kids today like to do.
That Doesn't Look Right
So, what do you think happened here? There are so many possibilities, they're endless, even. Was someone driving the car along the dock and it just kind of accidentally tipped into the water? If so, why on earth were they driving the car along the dock? That is stupid beyond belief. We hope everyone got out of the car safely, and just remember, kids, it's clear that alcohol and boating do not mix well together!
A Perfectly Timed Photo
It's not too often that you capture a photo that's so perfectly timed, yet here we are, and it's brilliant. This guy is less than a split second away from crashing into that pole. What are the chances of capturing that on camera? And whoever took the photo should really win some kind of photography award. But also, is that guy okay? Like really, did he make it without doing a backflip into the water and breaking every bone in his body?
What in the Dang Heck?
Perhaps someone set out to see if their RV was amphibious. Clearly, it is not, and it's probably ruined now. Speaking of amphibious cars, did you know that former U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson used to play an amusing (read: terrifying) prank on guests to his ranch where he would barrel down a hill, claim that the brakes had malfunctioned, and then end up in a lake below? The "funny" part was that the car was actually amphibious and could float in water.
The Boat is on its Own Mission
This guy probably started up the boat's engine, turned around for a split second to grab a beer from the cooler, and then looked up to see that the boat was driving itself away. How do you think he got it back? Perhaps he swam out to it, but probably not because that seems like it would be dangerous. Once again, kids, this is further proof that alcohol and boating do not mix well together. Always take caution!
Pretty Sure You Aren't Supposed to Do That...
Look, we don't really know THAT much about boat mechanics and boat safety in general, but we're pretty confident that you're not supposed to store your jet ski perpendicular on top of your convertible. That kind of just seems like a no-brainer. Just save up and buy a boat trailer. It'll probably save you thousands of dollars in paint jobs later on. And not to hate, but this photo really just screams "FLORIDA," doesn't it?
How...Did This Happen?
There are so many questions we have about this photo. Needless to say, how did the boat end up like this...? Was someone driving it at full speed and then it ended up going through the metal roof and destroying the fancy dock? Either way, all of these "mistakes" look expensive, so good luck with that. Once again, just say no to boating and alcohol. Are you recognizing a common theme with all of these photos yet?
Ya Dun Screwed up
Ha, get it? Screwed up? Or, more like "screwed down." Sorry, we'll stop with the terrible puns for now. Imagine taking this boat out on the water and realizing there are freaking holes in the bottom of it when it's too late. Hopefully you've got a lifejacket and you know how to swim! But seriously, what was this person thinking? What were they trying to drill? And why didn't they check to see what was beneath?
You Missed
Dude, you had one (incredibly easy) job. All you had to do was steer the boat underneath the OPEN drawbridge, but apparently you couldn't even do that, so now you're stuck and you're probably going to end up with thousands of dollars in damages to the roof of your boat. We're thinking this person probably went to go take a nap and assumed the boat wouldn't stray very far, but how very wrong they were!
Barrel Roll Fail
Here we can see another perfectly timed photo, in which this guy tried his hardest to do a barrel roll out on the water. While obviously it was a complete fail, an excellent photo came out of the situation. How often do you see such a perfectly timed photo? Other than in this list, not too often! We're willing to bet that this dude will be in quite a bit of pain tomorrow, so hopefully he's got ibuprofen!
That's One Way to Do it
Evidently, these people have found themselves in a bit of a predicament. Somehow water has flooded the boat and they've got to get it out one way or another. But hey, at least they've got lifejackets and it doesn't look too cold so they won't end up in an unfortunate Titanic situation. They're also not in the Atlantic Ocean hundreds of miles away from any civilization, so we'd wager a bet that they'll probably be okay.
Land Ho!
What do we have here? It looks like some explorers have discovered a new island. Only, said island is literally about 100 feet away from the shore, so we're not sure how it hadn't been previously discovered. It also appears that the explorers have abandoned ship. Perhaps they swam back to shore because they realized they would tip the boat over if they tried to sleep there. Honestly, anything is possible here if we just use our collective imaginations.
How Picturesque
Here we see a beautiful shot of a capsized speedboat in front of a sunset. Isn't it majestic? Perhaps the owners came back to their boat after a storm and a low tide and thought, How can we make this artistic? Well, they've done an excellent job, because it looks like a beautiful work of art. Now we're just curious as to whether the boat works at all anymore, or if it's permanently down for the count.
A Storm's A-Comin'
This person is in an inflatable boat that's only been half-inflated, under dark skies in what looks like Florida or some other tropical place. So, clearly a storm's a-comin' and they're out on the water completely unprotected once the skies open their floodgates. Hopefully they know how to swim, or they have a backup boat hidden somewhere that we can't see. But at the very least, get the cute dog out of there into safety!
Cowabunga!
Okay, this just looks awesome. This dude, while potentially an idiot, is clearly the life of the party. Why wait until you're in your swimsuit when you can just jump head-first right into a sick wave. What's even more impressive is that he doesn't even need a surfboard. He's not afraid of sharks. In fact, sharks are probably afraid of him. What an absolute mad man. (Side note: Please do not try this at home.)
Sir, That's Not a Boat
This guy is trying to get on top of that car like it's a boat, but we have some bad news for him: It's not a boat, and it will likely just sink, and he'll be stuck there. Unless, of course, it's actually an amphibious car just like good ol' Lyndon B. Johnson's that we mentioned earlier. In that case, go for it; just don't pull pranks on your friends like LBJ did, because that's just mean.
Looks Legit
When you go to the beach and forget your boat trailer, there's only one thing to do: Make your own out of scraps of wood and rope that you have lying around. Absolutely nothing can go wrong there! The boat definitely won't get detached from your car while you're driving down the highway or anything! Just one last question: How did they get the boat to the beach in the first place without a boat trailer?
